Six Forms Becomes An Expandable Card Game
My priority as the founder of Six Forms is to ensure that Six Forms will be here for the long-term so that we all can enjoy it. To do this, I must critically analyze the current state of Six Forms and the TCG landscape as it is today, not how it was in September.
When I announced Six Forms' March 19th launch date to everyone in September, Altered and SWU did not exist — Altered, specifically, the largest TCG launch of all time on Kickstarter. However, I chose to launch Six Forms as planned on March 19th because I said I would (integrity is deeply important to me). The TCG landscape was still really settling (these games weren't analyzed yet), and I hadn't thought of some of the points that the Kickstarter campaign community growth has brought to my attention in the form of feedback and suggestions since the campaign's launch.
As an example, Six Forms does not have a robust limited format, one of a TCG's hallmarks. So, I need to craft a limited format and move from intentions to implementation, which is a daunting task for our timeline. This is a clear mistake in priorities; rushing that process would be a major mistake. I want to make a highly tested, balanced, competitive PVP card game full of lore and deep strategic enjoyment for people to enjoy, and I want the community to help shape that future.
When I consider all of these acute facts, the massive new TCG launches, and the work to be done, it is clear that Six Forms' future lies in a different approach.
I need to apologize and admit that my deep love of TCGs kept me from seeing that a different approach would be best for Six Forms, best for my family, and best for all of you, the players, backers, and collectors of Six Forms. You, our backers, are deeply important to us. Without you, Six Forms would not be the game it is today.
As much as it pains me to close this chapter of Six Forms on Kickstarter, I can not deliver a product with integrity and say that we can thrive as a TCG. We are honored that you would trust us the way you do. We are saddened, anxious, excited, and hopeful about this change, and I truly believe it is for the best on all fronts and for all parties.
What is the different approach?
Along with many of you, I believe Six Forms can thrive best long-term under its new model as an XCG!
I have not made this decision to adopt the XCG model without the utmost care, thought, and consideration for the health and growth of the game. I have spoken with key community members who have been with Six Forms from day one. My family also agrees that the XCG model would provide more life balance. Further, without my prompting, many of you have expressed how much you think Six Forms would thrive as an XCG.
The XCG model stands for "Expandable Card Game" and is a variation of the TCG model. With an XCG:
- Expansions are sold in non-random packs (often thematically by "Faction") containing ALL of the cards for the expansion.
- The model ensures that all players have access to the same cards for competitive play, eliminating the need to purchase numerous packs in search of specific cards.
- The format makes the game significantly more price-approachable (allowing many more players to participate that otherwise might be skittish about a XCG).
- The format allows for significantly better balance testing ahead of actual production, and this has already begun with enthusiastic participation by many in our community.
- The format can be produced faster than a XCG with reduced logistical requirements.
What is the path forward, and how long will it take?
Before we can formally announce anything, we need to take a brief pause for planning. We must ensure our existing manufacturing partners are informed about this change. We have not told them yet; we wanted you all to know first.
I want to assure everyone that those who have already backed the TCG who choose to back the XCG on re-launch will receive special consideration and rewards! I must honor your time and emotional investment in Six Forms, especially at this hour of the campaign.
With all of this said, I ask that you not lose hope in Six Forms. Instead, please consider getting involved in community testing of the first XCG set release of Six Forms. The more balancing and testing we all can do as a community together, the better the product we receive will become!
The future of Six Forms is bright. Please join our Discord today to stay in the loop and help us begin the refinement and testing process for the final production of Set 1. The game is free to play right now, and your participation is greatly appreciated!
In the next few weeks, we will announce the next steps with a comprehensive roadmap for the rest of 2024 and 2025. Planning is required, and I can not break expectations again.
We know this is a very sudden and emotional change, but we also know it is the right change for long-term success. Join us on Discord. Help us make Six Forms an amazing XCG!
